Week 05

BJT Operating Regions

I organize a study path from diodes to single-transistor amplifiers in the order that makes the circuit behavior easiest to revisit.

Electronic Circuits I course visual
Course visual for this study sequence.

What I connect in this unit

In cutoff a BJT carries negligible current, forward active operation uses the base-emitter junction and current gain for amplification, and saturation occurs when the collector side can no longer sustain active-region behavior.

Concept map

  1. Cutoff
  2. Forward active
  3. Saturation
  4. Current gain

Technical anchor

The forward-active estimate IC ≈ βIB also requires VCE > VCE,sat; if βIB exceeds the load-limited current, saturation must be checked instead.

How I review it

For a chosen base current and collector resistor, test cutoff, active, and saturation assumptions by checking the resulting VCE and IC against each region condition.
