Week 11

Carrier and Timing Synchronization

I use the saved course file to reconnect sampling, baseband transmission, digital modulation, and error-rate analysis.

What I connect in this unit

Carrier offset rotates the constellation over time, phase offset creates a fixed rotation, and symbol-timing error narrows the eye opening. A known preamble provides a reference for estimating all three before data decisions.

Concept map

  2. Phase offset
  3. Symbol timing
  4. Preambles

Technical anchor

With frequency offset Δf, phase error at symbol n is φ[n] = φ0 + 2πΔf·nT, causing steady constellation rotation.

How I review it

Use the preamble correlation peak for frame start, estimate Δf from phase change across known symbols, and then check residual phase and timing sample position separately.
