Week 04

Reading the Smith Chart

I revisit transmission lines through Wilkinson and branch-line networks using my assignments, Cadence circuits, and S-parameter figures.

What I connect in this unit

The Smith chart maps normalized impedance onto the reflection-coefficient plane. Constant-resistance circles and reactance arcs locate the load, while admittance conversion and line rotation support series or shunt matching.

Concept map

  1. Normalized impedance
  2. Admittance conversion
  3. Constant-resistance circles
  4. Line rotation

Technical anchor

Plot z=Z/Z0 and rotate 180 degrees about the chart center to obtain y=1/z. Along a lossless line, motion toward the load and generator follows opposite directions on the constant-|Γ| circle.

How I review it

Compare the chart point with Γ calculated algebraically, and verify that the wavelength-scale rotation corresponds to the 2βl change in reflection phase.
